In case of accidental exposure to blood or other biological products, the instructions are posted in the laboratory:
Immediately cleanse the wound with running water and soap.
- Disinfect by soaking in a chlorinated product (Dakin’s solution, 12° chlorum bleach at 1:10 dilution) or in pvidone iodine or 70% alcohol. Leave in contact for a minimum of 5 minutes.
- If there was projection on the mucus membranes (the eyes in particular), rinse immediately with saline solution or water for at least 10 minutes.
- The infectious risk evaluation (HIV, HCV, HBV) should be done urgently by a physician for prophylactic purposes. Therefore the emergency protocol drafted with the disease prevention physician must be posted in the department (indicating the contact information for the treating physician and the serology monitoring to be done).
It is vital that the treatment be started quickly (within 4 hours if possible) for the greatest efficacy. Prophylactic treatment with antiviral agents is offered according to the level of risk.
NB: Immediately notify one of the biologists in order to contact one of the Infectious Disease Service teams (CHU Fann) for starting the prophylactic treatment.
- Notify the preventive medicine physician and declare the accident.
